Comets cash in as Eagles lose their cool EAGLE POINT � Crater demonstrated a killer instinct against Eagle Point in Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball Tuesday. The intense conference rivals were tied at the end of each of the first three quarters, but the Comets took advantage of a momentary surge to pull out to a 59-48 victory. With Crater (6-12, 2-6 SOC) holding a three-point lead early in the fourth quarter, Eagle Point�s Matt Campbell was called for a turnover on a breakaway lay-up attempt. Campbell took exception to the call and was assessed a technical foul. Then Eagle Point coach Keith Williams drew a double technical on the same play. The Comets made 3-of-6 free throws off the technicals to double their lead. "The real backbreaker was right after the technicals they came down on their next two possessions and hit 3�s," Eagle Point coach Keith Williams said. "It went from a six to 12-point game." Crater was 16-of-20 from the foul line in the final period and 25 of 32 for the game. Eagle Point (7-11, 2-6 SOC) converted on seven of its 10 free throw attempts. "Basically the free-throw line was the difference," said Williams. Junior guard Derek Petersen led a balanced Comet attack with 12 points. Andy Haas added 11 points and seven rebounds and Andrew Norum and Steve Darnell each tossed in 10. Eagle Point�s Danny Acrey led all scorers with 17 points, while Paul Burdick added 11 points and seven rebounds. NORTH MEDFORD 60, ASHLAND 53 � At Ashland, Ben Anderson had the hot hand for hot shooting North Medford and Ashland remained winless in all eight SOC outings. The Black Tornado junior guard scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. North (9-9, 5-3 SOC) connected on 52 percent of its field goal attempts and committed a season-low 12 turnovers. Junior post Gabe Burchfiel provided the Black Tornado 15 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Kevin Foreman added 14 points and seven rebounds. Kyle Allred led Ashland with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while guard Ryan Beugli added 14 points on a 6-of-9 effort from the field. The second-ranked Cavemen (18-0, 8-0 SOC), who defeated the Pelicans (6-9, 3-5 SOC) 58-53 in their SOC season opener, had a much easier go this time. SOC Girls NORTH MEDFORD 40, ASHLAND 39 � Kara Hwang sank two free throws with 7.1 seconds as the Black Tornado jolted Ashland (11-7, 6-4, SOC) out of a second-place tie. The Tornado�s (6-13, 3-7 SOC) biggest win of the year came on the heels of a 55-53 loss to last-place Eagle Point. "I don�t know if it was in reaction to what happened against Eagle Point, but our focus was absolutely like a team that could win some games," North Medford coach J.T. Thomas said. Brittany Hodges matched Hwang�s team-high 10 points and limited Ashland�s Hanna Seltzer to seven. Ashley Nelson bounced back from a one-game suspension to score seven points, collect seven rebounds, pass out three assists and grab three steals. Anna Lilly sprained her shoulder in the first half, but came back to finish the contest. Jackie Woods paced the Grizzlies, who host Crater Friday, with 21 points. McLeod re-aggravated an ankle injury and is questionable for Friday�s game with Ashland. Crater, who hit 7 of 10 from 3-point range, blew open a close game with a 47-24 scoring advantage over the second and third periods. Amy Denson led the Comets (18-1, 10-0 SOC) with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Sarah Pool added 14 points and 11 assists. Alisa Lee scored a game-high 19 points for Eagle Point (5-14, 1-9 SOC), which picked up their first conference win in 33 games last Friday over North Medford.
