Mail Tribune / Jim Craven Time to sharpen skating skills Outdoor ice rink opens for season in Ashland; days and hours set for all ages and experience By VICKIE ALDOUS for the Mail Tribune ASHLAND — Children and adults are gliding over the ice again with the opening of the Darex Family Ice Rink on Friday at Lithia Park. The rink, entering its seventh season, offers sessions for everybody from tottering novices to National Hockey League hopefuls. Emily Jones, recreational supervisor for the ice rink, said she believes this season will be as successful as seasons past, especially early on. "We will be better starting off, because the mountain (Mount Ashland Ski Area) is not open yet," Jones said this morning. "As long as it's not raining — even though the rink is covered people don't come as much — we will do well." One man showed up at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning to break in the rink, and a handful of locals took to the ice later in the morning. City workers spent part of the morning hanging up "Skate Rules" signs along the outer boards of the rink, and finished installing a rubber walkway that protects skates from concrete surrounding the facility. Open skate and open hockey sessions are for people of all ages and abilities. Power skate periods are reserved for those age 16 and older, and are designed for people who want to use the rink for a workout. Skaters also must be age 16 or older for the adult hockey session. The adult recreational skate period is more slow-paced and for people age 18 and older. The cost per person for each session ranges from $1.50 to $3, which does not include the cost of renting skates. Hockey and figure skates are available for rent for $2, with single blade skates available from a child's size 9 to an adult size 12. Double- bladed skates are available in children's size 10 and 11. The rink’s schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays: 8-10 a.m. — free open skate for people with their own skates. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. — open skate, adults $2, youths $1.50. 5:30-6:30 p.m. — power skate, $2. 7-9 p.m. — open skate, adults $2, youths $1.50. Tuesdays and Thursdays: 8-10 a.m. — free open skate. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. — open skate, adults $2, youths $1.50. 5:30-7 p.m. — open hockey, all ages $3. 7:30-9 p.m. — adult hockey. Adults $3. Fridays: 8-10 a.m. — free open skate. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. — open skate. Adults $2, youths $1.50. 5:30-10 p.m. — open skate, adults $2, youths $1.50. Saturdays: 9-10 a.m. — open hockey, all ages $3. 10:30-11:30 a.m. — adult recreational skate, $2. Noon-4:30 p.m. — open skate, all ages $1.50. 5-10 p.m. — open skate, all ages $1.50. Sundays: 8:30-10 a.m. — adult hockey, adults $3. 10:30-11:30 a.m. — Adult recreational skate, $2. Noon-4:30 p.m. — open skate, all ages $1.50. 5-9 p.m. — open skate, all ages $1.50. Except for special holiday hours posted at the rink, the session schedule is good through Jan. 5. The schedule will change Jan. 6. The rink will be open through March 2 and then close for the season.
