Jason Atkinson today cleared his latest hurdle toward becoming one of Oregon's seven citizen volunteers who help form the state's fish and wildlife policies. The 44-year-old Central Point man this afternoon passed through an Oregon Senate's Rules Committee vetting his nomination to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission, and his nomination now goes to the full Senate for approval. Atkinson, who served 14 years on that committee during his Oregon Senate tenure, said he was asked the same question today that he used to pose to nominees — who do you work for in this position? "I said, 'I work for the people of Oregon,'" Atkinson told the Mail Tribune after the hearing. "The right answer for anybody in public service is you work for the people." The former Republican senator turned filmmaker and author could join Michael Finley and Bob Webber on the commission as members with Medford ties. Finley lives in Medford and Webber is a Medford lawyer who recently moved to Port Orford. Atkinson has been nominated by Gov. Kate Brown to represent Oregon's 2nd Congressional District on the seven-member commission. Also passing through the Senate Rules Committee was the nomination of Bruce Buckmaster, who has drawn the ire of some sportsmen and sport-fishing interests because of his role in commercial gillnet fisheries on the Columbia River. The committee did not act on Finley's reappointment as well as the reappointment of Holly Akenson of Enterprise. Brown could name new nominees to those two at-large posts or the committee could act at a later date. It was not immediately clear what their next steps are for their reappointments.
