Two samples of mosquitoes, collected Aug. 19 in north Medford and northeast of Central Point, have tested positive for the virus, raising the total number of positive mosquito samples to date to 12, according to a news release from the Jackson County Vector Control District. Nine samples collected in other areas of the county previously tested positive for the virus, as did two dead scrub jays found July 20 in northeast Medford and Aug. 12 west of Central Point. West Nile, discovered in Uganda in 1937, first appeared in the United States in 1999 and has since spread throughout the country. The Centers for Disease Control reported that as of Aug. 11, West Nile infections had been reported in 45 states this year. In Oregon, the virus been confirmed in Baker, Umatilla, Union, Malheur, Morrow, Wallowa and Jackson counties. Authorities ask anybody who notices sick or recently deceased crows, ravens, hawks, owls or robins to call the district offices at 541-826-2199 so the birds can be picked up for testing.
