Three non-conference games into its schedule, the 3-0 Black Tornado is showing it’s not only better than last year’s 5-19 team, but it might even be an SOC title contender under first-year head coach Tim Karrick. Saturday afternoon, North beat South Eugene, 56-49, in the Axemen’s gym behind 49 points from the trio of Mellisa Eastwold, Kerstin Mellbye and Michelle Westermann. South Eugene was 2-0 and coming off a 72-51 thumping of South Medford on Friday night. "They were averaging 80-some points coming in," Karrick said. "The pace wasn’t what I thought it would be. ... We really didn’t give up any easy lay-ins. By halftime, they were trying to slow the game down." North allowed just 18 points in building a seven-point halftime edge and persevered after the Axemen cut their deficit to 39-36 entering the fourth quarter. Eastwold, a 6-foot sophomore who plays inside and on the perimeter, shot 8-for-14 from the field for 18 points and posted team highs in rebounds (six), steals (four) and assists (three). "She just played great for us," Karrick said. Mellbye, a 6-2 senior post, hit 9-of-17 field goals for 18 points, and Westermann, a 6-0 sophomore post, was 6-of-8 in scoring 13. "We’re pushing the ball and looking to get the ball inside with our posts running the floor," Karrick said. "(Guards) Kailey Bostwick and Anna Lilly are doing a good job of recognizing when to pass inside."
