Can Medford Water Commission handle this demand? — T.J.W. No worries, T.J, the Medford Water Commission is way ahead of you. The commission has studied what would happen to the water supply if the population were to double in the Rogue Valley. Advertisement "We basically have done water resource plans to 2050 and it appears that we have reasonable water rights to meet the growth projected for that rate," said Medford Water Commission manager Ed Olson. If the community uses less water than anticipated, we can expect the current supply to last even longer, Olson said. Olson expects a more aggressive conservation program to emerge in the next few years to protect the water we have and meet long-term needs. Mainly, the valley’s water comes from the Big Butte Springs, near Mount McLoughlin. In the summer, however, the Rogue River is also tapped. On a peak summer day, about half of the water is from the springs, while the other half is from the Rogue River, Olson said. For more information about our water supply, contact the Medford Water Commission for a pamphlet. Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
