Dearmon had a toss of 51 feet, 9 inches as the Southern Oregon Conference opened its dual-meet season. Scott Myers wasted no time in establishing himself as the top discus thrower in the state. The North Medford High senior launched a school-record toss of 173-feet, 1-inch during a Southern Oregon Conference dual meet victory over Eagle Point Thursday at Bowerman Field. Myers also registered a 57-4� throw in the shot put to complete one of the top doubles in Black Tornado history as the SOC season got off to a grand start. The North Medford boys rolled to a 114-31 victory over the Eagles. The Tornado girls also won easily, 107-37, behind a school-record performance in the 400-meter dash by freshman Brittany Hodges. Hodges ran the event in 58.04 seconds and came back later in the day to post a 57-second split in the 4x400-meter relay. Meanwhile, over at South Medford, the Panther boys and girls teams rolled to dual meet victories over Crater despite a solid early-season effort of 52-0� in the shot put by the Comets� Chris Dearmon. At Ashland, the Grizzlies struggled in their opener against Grants Pass as the Cavers swept the boys (99-46) and girls (84-61) competitions. At Roseburg, the host Indians won in boys 73-72, while the Klamath Union girls won by the same score of 73-72. North Medford coach Mark Hodges said he wasn�t surprised that Myers launched a lifetime best toss in the discus. "He�s been consistently over 160 feet in practice," Hodges said, "and he�s been working real hard in the weight room all winter. "I think this is just the tip of the iceberg. He�s going to have a great season." Myers� effort in the discus broke the North Medford school record of 172-4 held by John McEwen and is the third-best toss in Black Tornado history. Greg Atterbury reached 178-8 in 1968 and Mike Gilmore threw 174-4 in 1966 while competing for Medford High. Brittany Hodges, meanwhile, came within a half-second of her lifetime best in the 400 set last year at a Junior Olympic meet. Hodges, who is the daughter of the head coach, has been suffering from soreness in her hip and has been brought along slowly in workouts this spring. "She hadn�t done any explosive speed work until the last week or two," Mark Hodges said. "Her leg feels fine but we�re going to be conservative in our approach. She�s got the whole season in front of her." Brittany Hodges anchored North Medford�s 4x400 relay team that registered a fine early-season time of 4:10 and also ran on the Tornado�s 4x100 relay squad that was clocked in 50.4.The South Medford boys used sweeps in the 100- and 200-meter dashes as a springboard in their 99-45 romp over Crater. Jonathan Klenke (11.5), Andres Reed (11.5) and an ailing Justin Baldoni (11.5) went 1-2-3 in the 100 while Reed led a sweep in the 200.
