Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 2, 1915 The use of the silo throughout the year is finding favor with many stockkeepers. It is quite difficult to obtain a profit on pasture which is on land worth $100 or more per acre. During drought seasons, the pasture is often so poor that it affords little or no feed, but the interest on the investment, and the taxes must be found. There is no question but what the use of the silo for summer feeding will make rapid gains during the next few years and will soon come into common use. The millions of tons of corn stalks and rough forage which are not annually going to waste will find use in the form of silage and will make possible not only a cheaper production of stock and stock products, but will also make it possible to increase the profit of stock raising. Farmers who are complaining of low profits from cattle should make a study of the silo, as they will find a means to increase their profits and do this with less labor.   Ashland Items: "Doc" Saunders, at his barber shop headquarters on East Main Street, is local correspondent for the "Echo of the Moose," a new official paper of the big fraternity which is published at Fort Jones, Calif. "Doc" dishes up some hot stuff from this locality, inasmuch as he possesses the happy faculty of being a ready writer and he can dip a facile pen in wormwood and gall if deemed necessary. The fine musical entertainment afforded by the choir of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Medford, at the local armory Tuesday night, was listened to by an audience of just 38 people. Inasmuch as the choir ensemble numbered 40, the unfavorable effect by way of comparison was all the more noticeable. However, the visitors did their best, in spite of a scant attendance, which was not altogether due to the stress of weather. Evidently a sacred cantala, even in Ashland, cannot attract equal to the average moving picture film. Leaving all the other churches out of the question, the Methodist following here — the strongest numerically and financially in town — is amply sufficient to have afforded the visiting singers a full measure of encouragement.
