Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 5, 2006 Surging Challengers move into tie for first Boys Basketball MERRILL — Cascade Christian came full circle with an impressive, 69-44 boys basketball win over Lost River Saturday. The win by the Challengers over the Southern Cascade League-leading Raiders created a three-way logjam atop the standings. Cascade Christian (16-5 overall), St. Mary’s and Lost River are tied for first place with 8-2 records. It was after the Challengers were beaten by Lost River three weeks ago that Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse held team meetings. His team was shooting only 28 percent from the field and turning the ball over an average of 24 times a game. "We set some goals and talked about how things needed to change," said Morse. "We needed to work harder, the coaches needed to work harder. We started to get the intensity back into our practice. It took about a week and a half or two weeks before we saw it work its way to the basketball court." Advertisement The Challengers’ win Saturday was their sixth straight. In that span, they’ve shot 54 percent and cut their turnovers to 11 per game. "Now we’re starting to play better as a team," said Morse. "It’s much more fun to coach and watch." Cascade Christian led 38-31 at halftime, but the defense wasn’t playing to its capability, and Morse addressed that at halftime. The Raiders then went the first seven minutes of the third quarter without scoring and finished the second half with only 13 points. Josh Heidegger had 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for the Challengers. The 6-foot-3 junior made 7 of 8 field goals and 8 of 9 free throws. Guard Josh Smith had nine points and seven assists, and Andrew Shipley scored 12 points. CASCADE CHRISTIAN (69) — Sha 0, Morse 0, A. Shipley 12, D. MARY’S 66, BONANZA 56 — Austin Grant scored eight of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to help host St. Mary’s pull away for the SCL win. Grant broke a 53-all tie with a 3-pointer at the 4:09 mark in the fourth quarter, then countered a Bonanza bucket with an offensive putback for a 58-55 St. Mary’s lead. Grant, Richie Kaimie, Kris Slavenski and Robby Boggess each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch. Boggess, a 6-foot-3 junior post, scored a career-high 16 points on 6 of 7 shooting, and Kaimie added 16 points. The Crusaders (15-4, 8-2 SCL) are now in a three-way tie for first in the SCL with Lost River and Cascade Christian. St. Mary’s hosts Cascade Christian Tuesday. Skyline A League PROSPECT 53, GILCHRIST 51 — At Prospect, Prospect’s Ricky Miller made four free throws in the final minute, and Gilchrist didn’t have time to get off a final shot in the Sky A League contest. Miller made two foul shots for a 51-48 Prospect lead, but Gilchrist’s Robby Scevers drained a 3-pointer to tie it. Miller again went to the line with 10 seconds left and made two foul shots for a 53-51 lead. With Gilchrist working for a final shot, the Cougars twice knocked the ball out of bounds. The Grizzlies had only two-tenths of a second left to inbound and score and were unsuccessful. Darryl Swearingen had 23 points, 18 rebounds and six steals for Prospect (15-7, 8-2 Sky A). BUTTE FALLS 35, HOSANNA CHRISTIAN 33 — At Butte Falls, Chris Stephenson and Dillon Ross each made a free throw in the final 1½ minutes as Butte Falls held on in the Sky A League game. Stephenson had 13 points, eight steals and five assists for the Loggers (10-12, 6-4 Sky A). Ross tallied 13 points and five rebounds, while Michael McLauchlan pulled down 12 boards. The victory, built on the best defense his team has played, said coach Kim Horn, avenged a 70-21 loss the first time around in league. Stephenson didn’t play in the first meeting.
