John Joseph Galaviz, 29, of the 100 block of Eagle View Drive, faces charges in Jackson County Circuit Court of second-degree assault, two counts of third-degree assault, fourth-degree assault, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of recklessly endangering another person. Galaviz — who is being held in Jackson County Jail on $1,030,000 bail — pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday. He had reportedly been in a civil dispute over the vehicle with his nephew, Matthew Manninen, when he saw Manninen with the vehicle at Bear Creek Park in Medford, Medford police said in an affidavit. Galaviz allegedly chased Manninen back to the vehicle. As Manninen was driving away, Galaviz allegedly swung a Bear Grylls brand machete at the front passenger window, causing it to shatter and cutting passenger Maria Jones on the ear, the affidavit said. Galaviz then allegedly swung the machete again, shattering a rear passenger window. He allegedly reached into the vehicle and struck Manninen on the chest, causing an injury consistent with a bladed object, the affidavit said. Manninen was able to drive away and escape further injury, the affidavit said. Manninen told police Galaviz regularly carries a machete with an orange handle that is part of the Bear Grylls collection of survival and outdoor gear. A former British Special Forces soldier, Grylls has become an international television star by hosting survival shows, including NBC's "Running Wild," in which he takes celebrities on wilderness adventures. His outdoor-equipment products include knives, hatchets, clothing, backpacks, fire-starting devices and compasses. A familiar face to local law enforcement, Galaviz was convicted of second-degree forgery and identity theft in a 2011 case involving a forged prescription for the addictive painkiller oxycodone. He pleaded guilty to methamphetamine possession in 2012. In 2014, Galaviz pleaded guilty to a variety of crimes, including fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving. In that case, he sped away after a traffic stop, ran through multiple stop signs, drove in the oncoming lane of traffic and evaded spike strips before a pursuing officer nudged the rear corner of his vehicle, causing him to spin out and stop, according to Medford police. He has a pending case for second-degree theft and another case in which he has been charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person and criminal driving while suspended.  According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Galaviz allegedly drove off after a traffic stop for speeding and exceeded 100 mph while fleeing.
