Councilor Dick Gordon (Corrected) made the motion to appoint Sparacino chief, and councilor Mike Zarosinski seconded. The council voted 8-0 in favor of Sparacino. "This was an outcome that I favor," Gordon said. An emotionally moved Sparacino made a short address to the council following the appointment. Many Medford police staff attended the City Council meeting, and Sparacino thanked both the council and Police Department staff for trusting him. "I will make you proud and I will make those folks proud," Sparacino said. Many gave Sparacino hugs and handshakes outside council chambers before he addressed reporters. "It's a dream come true," Sparacino said. "I've started at the bottom of the Police Department as a volunteer, and worked my way entirely up to the top." Sparacino holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Oregon University. He was first hired in 1990 as a Medford police bike cadet, becoming a sworn officer in 1994. He has worked as a patrol officer, field training officer, patrol sergeant, financial investigation section sergeant, internal affairs sergeant, patrol lieutenant and administrative lieutenant. "I imagined that I would retire as a sergeant, that was my goal," Sparacino said. "But to have gone through every feasible rank in the Medford Police Department, that's a dream come true. I could hardly imagine that. Sparacino said he has great staff and great support from the council. "Knowing that you have the support, unanimous vote from the council, that's amazing and I won't let them down," Sparacino said. Sparacino said he plans to approach his new role in a straightforward and open fashion. "I'm going to be the kind of chief who's approachable, transparent and a forward-thinker," Sparacino said.
