She was born July 13, 1926 in Cambridge, Neb. to Edna and Bartholomew Norton. Betty moved to Colorado and later, to Portland, Ore. with her family. There she met, and later married, Roderick Groshong on December 27, 1947 in St. Peter's Catholic Church, Portland, Ore. Devoted to her husband, and supporting his career in education, Rod and Betty lived in several communities in Oregon, raising six children. Betty took pride in her role of housewife, mother, cook, and unsurpassed gardener. She was involved in Scouts, 4-H and many activities to support her children. Once the children were grown, she went to work for Harry & David. Betty loved to fish. She had the knack to out-fish anyone in the boat with her. Great memories were made yearly at Diamond Lake with the whole family. Later, Betty and Rod were able to spend summers in Campbell River, Canada catching as many salmon as possible. As a widow, she became very involved in ministry at Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church. She helped for many years with RCIA, the New Catholic education and sacrament program. She leaves behind many dear friends from this time in her life. Betty's family is grateful to this group of friends and their ongoing love given to Betty after she moved into assisted living. Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rod Groshong; her oldest son, Tim Groshong; her second son, Tom Groshong; and her brother, Tom Norton. She is survived by her three sisters, Jean Marthaller, Patricia Emmons, and Marily Gloege; her brother, Jack Norton; her children, Kevin Groshong (Susan), Kelly Groshong, MaryBeth Munroe (Steve), and Molly Salazar (Alfredo); 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. All appreciate the legacy she left for them. A memorial Mass will be held to celebrate Betty's life and faith at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2015 at Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church, Central Point, Ore. A graveside service will follow at Eagle Point National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church, RCIA Ministry or Children's Ministry.
