We were pleasantly surprised to find one of the classiest atmospheres of any Asian restaurant in Medford at Soo Rah Korean Cuisine. We recognized some of the furnishings that belonged to the former bistro, and we noticed the contemporary — and heirloom, perhaps — curios and adornments that now give the venue a Zen-like ambiance. Soo Rah's menu belies the delicious food that awaits diners. Simple descriptions of noodle, curry, tofu, bibimbap and the lunch specials were printed on plain white paper and attached to clipboards. I'm a big fan of Asian food with its healthful ingredients and spicy flavors, but I was a bit lost looking at Soo Rah's offerings. Not Anita. She zeroed in on the bibimbap, a traditional Korean dish of crispy rice piled with toppings and spicy sauce. It isn't common at Medford restaurants, but Soo Rah offers options featuring beef, chicken, tofu, kimchee or vegetables. She selected the vegetable offering ($7.99). "It's good for vegetarians," said owner and chef Paul Yeo, who waited at our table. The melange of vegetables is good for anyone who likes a riot of color, flavor and texture in their food. For the bibimbap, a hot stoneware bowl creates a crisp crust on the bottom of the rice, which was then topped with a fried egg, julienned zucchini, carrot and daikon, shredded napa cabbage, bean sprouts, thinly sliced mushrooms, a handful of baby greens, a few crispy kale chips and some steamed traditional roots and stems Anita couldn't positively identify but enjoyed nonetheless. A sauce made with fermented chili paste and soy was served on the side so she could add savory heat to taste. I considered the chicken teriyaki, then bravely ordered the Galbi Korean Barbecue ($10.99), made from beef short ribs and marinated in a sweet and spicy sauce. The meat is marinated for three days, Yeo says, before it is grilled and served. Some restaurants that specialize in galbi cook the meat at the table. Soo Rah's galbi comes from the kitchen, and it arrives at the table sizzling hot with a side of fluffly steamed white rice and slaw made from cabbage and other greens. Our lunches came with a little cup of a delicate soup — just small mushrooms and threads of beaten egg floating in a clear but flavorful broth. Crunchy kimchee that had a hint of sweetness from carrots along with the typical spicy cabbage also accompanied our meal. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at Soo Rah Korean Cuisine, 38 Central Ave. The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and noon to 9 p.m. Sundays. The dinner menu is equally enticing, with dumplings, tempura, edamame, stews and soups, along with dairy-free banana ice cream made at the restaurant. Along with authentic Korean cuisine, Soo Rah offers Japanese sushi and a full bar. A grand opening celebration is set for sometime in February.
