Police arrest suspect in carjacking; reward offered for second man ... 1-800-Flowers down for quarter, up for year Comment By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 27, 2015 at 5:02 PM By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 27, 2015 at 5:02 PM » Social News Harry & David's parent company 1-800-Flowers.com performed a lot like its acquisition during fiscal 2015. The Long Island-based floral and gift company, which added the Medford gourmet food and gift provider in September 2014, reported a $10.7 million fourth fiscal quarter loss Thursday, but wound up the transitional year with a $20.3 million profit. "We have an improving environment, it seems, in terms of consumer confidence, in terms of the craziness in the general world markets is one thing," Chairman and CEO Jim McCann told analysts during a conference call. "But at the level that we work ... primarily U.S., primarily consumer-focused, we’re pleased with the environment and expect it will give us a good opportunity." During the fourth quarter, revenue jumped 21.8 percent to $228.3 million, compared to $187.4 million a year ago. For the year, revenue soared 48.3 percent as the company hit a new plateau — $1.12 billion. CFO Bill Shea said Harry & David's pre-tax costs this year were about $19 million. While 1-800-Flowers executives largely stood on the sidelines during Harry & David's annual holiday run in 2014, it will be far more hands-on this fall. McCann said Harry & David's and Wolferman's customers will be exposed to other 1-800-Flowers brands in coming months. At the same time, the CEO doesn't want to upend a reliable customer base. "If you go back to last year, you can count on the fact that you'll see us do that in a very predictable, very cautious fashion as we move into the holiday season," McCann said. "The last thing we want to do is disrupt any sort of customer flow or enact any sort of customer confusion." McCann said there are 46 Harry & David stores, following the closure of two when leases expired. "The evaluation was that they didn't make sense to keep," McCann said. "We have a few different concepts in the retail store mix. Some look quite promising, some we have some questions on. We’re making some changes in them. ... So as we operate through this holiday season, we'll be testing, we'll be looking at the different models, seeing which makes sense, which don't, which should go, and which should we put some more energy behind. I don't anticipate there will be any other store closings." Reach reporter Greg Stiles at 541-776-4463 or [email protected] .
