Lois Manley Thomas MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 14, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Sep. 14, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News Lois Manley Thomas of Ashland passed away Friday, September 5, 2014. Born in Siloam Springs, Ark. October 11, 1921 she moved frequently with her parents, Walter and Rita Manley (nee Mooney) until they settled in Phoenix, Ariz. In high school she met William "Bill" Thomas, and they married May 7, 1943, the day after he graduated from Army Air Corps navigator's school in Deming, N.M. They were together until his death in January 2006. She followed him to further B-17 training assignments in Madras, Ore, Ephrata and Moses Lake, Wash. before he was sent to England with the 94th Bomb Squadron. After the war they moved to Berkeley where he attended the University of California on the GI Bill. They lived in married student quarters and Lois explored cooking styles with wives from different cultures. During this time, Lois and Bill visited Ashland for the first time to see a play and Lois fell in love with its spirit of culture and good food. Bill was recalled into the Air Force during the Korean War and they began the roving life of a military family. During a three-year tour in England, Lois discovered her love of foreign travel, different cultures, and especially British history. She remained an Anglophile for the rest of her life. Lois raised four children as a military spouse, supporting her family in both urban and very isolated locales. After Bill's retirement from the service in 1968, Lois and Bill moved to San Mateo, Calif. and began visiting Ashland more frequently. In 1986 after moving around so much of her life, Lois finally settled permanently in the town she loved. She dove into the Ashland community for the next 23 years, rarely missing a play at OSF or a Fourth of July picnic in Lithia Park. She was a volunteer at OSF and a member of the Bowmer Society which supports education and in-school programs. Every February, Lois spent a few weeks at the small Breakers Hotel in Honolulu and became close friends with other returning guests. She was active in the Ashland Garden Club, Trinity Episcopal Church, OLLI, her book group, and her water exercise class at the YMCA, particularly enjoying gatherings 3 days per week with other exercisers to drink coffee and support each other. She is survived by Diana Quirk (Michael), Francie Thomas (Tom O'Connor), Rich Thomas (Susan), and Patty Tindall (Malcom). She has four grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday October 11, 2014, which would have been her 93rd birthday, at Trinity Episcopal Church with reception to follow.
