A wisp of smoke was reported above the Logtown Cemetery between Jacksonville and Ruch on Friday. Oregon Department of Forestry crews hiked to a ridge south of Forest Creek Road and west of Highway 238 and found a dead tree that had been hit by lightning, fire-prevention specialist Dennis Turco said. Firefighters extinguished the burning tree and contained the fire at a tenth of an acre, he said. Crews also went to a small fire burning in the remote Cougar Creek area, which is four miles west of Applegate Lake and a mile and a half north of the Oregon-California border.
