Crater wins hoop start OREGON CITY � The Crater High girls basketball team got off to a good start at the 64-team End of the Trail basketball tournament on Thursday. Sarah Pool and Amy Denson scored 16 points apiece and Janelle Sapienza added 13 as the Comets raced past Skyview, Wash., 67-42. The Comets meet Jesuit High of Beaverton today at 2 p.m. in a second-round game. Jesuit steamrolled Juanita High of Seattle 74-54 Thursday. Using a full-court press to full advantage, the Comets jumped to an 18-6 lead in the first half. Skyview closed to within 31-20 at the half, but the Comets were never seriously threatened the rest of the way. Skyview, which finished fourth at the Class 4A state tournament in Washington last season, was led by Tiffany Ward�s 14 points and 10 rebounds. Pool, a 5-foot-6 point guard who will be a junior next fall, added three steals and three assists while Denson chipped in four assists and three rebounds. American Legion Baseball � COOKE�S 10, MUSTANGS 6 � At Salem, Ryan Godfrey blasted a pair of home runs and Riley Jenkins added another as Cooke�s Stationery of Salem posted a 10-6 victory over the Medford Mustangs at the Willamette Classic baseball tournament on Thursday. Jenkins slammed a two-run shot in the first inning and Godfrey followed with a solo shot as Cooke�s jumped to a 3-0 lead. Godfrey�s other homer came in a three-run second inning as Cooke�s extended its advantage to 6-0 before the Mustangs were able to get on the board. Colby Gonzales went 3-for-4 to lead Medford. Eric Bartels and Travis Dunlap each added two hits for the Mustangs, who saw their season record dip to 11-8. Medford plays Red Lion of Vancouver, Wash., at 10 a.m. today and later meets the Locker Room of Longview, Wash. Bicycle Racing � SOUTHERN OREGON � Bicycle racing will hit the Rogue Valley at full speed this weekend. Some 80 to 90 racers will compete at the Southern Oregon Dragway on Saturday, with a $500 purse expected to lure some of the top professional riders in the state. The competition is also open to amateur riders, with junior, women, beginning and masters categories available. Racers will compete in timed events on one- and two-mile courses. Amateur racers will go for 30 minutes and pros for 90 minutes. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the racing strats at 8:45. On Sunday, as many as 100 riders are expected for a road race in Sam�s Valley. The course is 19 miles, but many of the riders will go around it more than once.
