The NCAA Division II Vikings (2-3-1) peppered a pair of Southern Oregon goalkeepers with 34 shots, and freshman midfielder Chela Gray scored twice in the opening half and assisted the game- winning score to spearhead WWU’s most productive offensive outing of the season. The Raiders (2-2), who entered the contest having held opponents scoreless in 204 minutes spanning their past three games, mustered only four total shots with two coming from freshman forward Katie Emerson. "There was no question Western Washington was the more aggressive team today," Raider coach Jose Chavez said. "They had excellent ball control, and we didn*t have the same type of finesse to create many scoring chances." Freshman midfielder Chrissy Wohl recorded the first Viking goal in the 17th minute, a 5-yard chip shot from the left side off a short feeder from Gray. WWU took a 2-nil advantage seven minutes later when Gray beat Raider starting goalie Rachel Serpa on a penalty kick, and she hit the back of the net again in the 28th minute on a 10-foot shot from the right side. Southern Oregon held off the Viking onslaught for the next 59 game minutes until the closing moments when senior all-star midfielder Kristin Whitlock sliced a 15-yarder over Raider goalie Patti McCoy from an extreme angle in the 87th minute. Freshman midfielder Lizzy Page capped the scoring and took advantage of a defensive breakdown by hitting from 10-feet in front of the SOU goal in the 90th minute. The Raiders begin a three-game road trip starting next Friday at Cascade Conference rival Eastern Oregon.
