The drive comes less than a month after Whitney, a North Medford High School graduate, died in a plane crash in Utah. Whitney, who was a student at Utah Valley University's flight school, was piloting a single-engine Diamond Da-20 when it fell from the sky and crashed into a driveway. Whitney's instructor also was killed in the crash. David Whitney Sr. said his son had been fascinated by planes since he was a little boy. Whitney Jr. planned to become a commercial pilot after graduating from flight school, his father said. "He loved air shows as a boy and always wanted to be in the cockpit," Whitney Sr. said. "Flying was a dream of his." Whitney Jr. also enjoyed giving back to his community, which included blood donations every eight weeks, his parents said. "He said it was an easy way to contribute," said his mother Susan Whitney. The Whitneys, who live in Medford, said Whitney Jr. was well-liked wherever he lived. His memorial services in Medford and Utah each drew more than 500 people. Whitney Jr. left behind his young wife, Angie, whom he met in Mexico during a Mormon church mission. The couple were married on Dec. 21, 2009, and did not have time to start a family, Susan Whitney said. "They agreed to wait a year until they started attempting to have children," Susan Whitney said. "That was just two weeks from now. It's hard for Angie to think about. It's been an especially hard time for her." Angie Whitney has been living in the Whitney family home in Medford and plans to attend Rogue Valley Community College. Through translation by Whitney Sr., she said her husband would often try and talk her into giving blood, but she was "scared of needles." "This would make us laugh," she said. Angie said her husband had made an appointment to donate blood before he died. Susan Whitney said one of her favorite pictures of her son shows him with a small bandage on his arm. "It is clear he had just given blood before the picture was taken," she said. The blood drive in Whitney Jr.'s memory will be held Thursday, Dec. 9, at the Mormon church, 2900 Juanipero Way in Medford. The drive will begin at 1 p.m. and go until 7 p.m. To schedule an appointment or for more information, see www.redcrossblood.org and use sponsor code: MedfordLDS; or contact American Red Cross representative Christina Dunlap at 541-842-4707. Identification is required to donate blood.
