Mark Freeman earned a first place award for his column, Outdoor Journal, which appears weekly in the Mail Tribune's Oregon Outdoors section. His column topics included his close encounter with a hungry sea lion , tips on fly fishing for summer steelhead and fly fishing for salmon in the Elk River. Nick Morgan earned a second place in investigative reporting for his coverage of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department's decision to drop the use of a video security system at Shady Cove School. Dan Jones earned a second place award in sports features for his story titled "Unbreakable," about Butte Falls athlete Spencer Scofield, who returned to the sports he loved after overcoming a life-threatening disease. The contest includes medium-sized daily newspapers in SPJ's Region 10, which takes in Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon.
