The Chieftains, who have struggled at the outset of each of the last two seasons, improved to 4-0 behind strong pitching and timely hitting. "For the last two years, we’ve started out slowly and ended up being the team looking in at the state playoffs," said Rogue River coach John White. "This year we vowed to start a little faster." Senior second baseman Josh Hill went 3-for-4 and finished the tournament with seven hits in nine at-bats. Teammate Nate Kinman belted a solo home run in the second inning. But the big blows came in the fourth and fifth innings. With the score tied at 4-all, Alex Waroff led off the fourth with an infield single. He stole second and third then scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Joey Parrillo. Advertisement Gary Richardson manufactured a run in the fifth when he tripled and scored on an errant relay throw from the outfield. Relief pitcher Mike Miller struck out the Bruins’ No. 3 hitter with the bases loaded to fend off a late Brookings charge. Rogue River limited the Bruins to seven hits and has now given up only five earned runs in four games. "We’ve had pretty strong pitching so far," said White. "Richardson (Rogue River’s No. 1 pitcher) has been really strong and Justin Castro has thrown well, too." The Chieftains next take on Sutherlin Friday. Skyline Conference play begins March 31. ASHLAND 10, CRESCENT VALLEY 7 — At Ashland, Steve Jorgensen had three hits, including a bases-clearing double in a decisive six-run fourth inning, to lead Ashland over Crescent Valley in the Ashland High spring break tournament. Jorgensen, who is now 8-for-10 at the plate on the season, added three RBIs, a stolen base and a run for the Grizzlies, who improved their record to 2-1. Aaron San Nicholas allowed six hits and two earned runs through five innings to get the win. Losing pitcher Dave Galven had a hot hand at the plate with four singles. DAKOTA RIDGE 7, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 — At Peoria, Ariz., Justin Meyer went 3-for-3 at the plate but the South Medford cleanup hitter had little help offensively as Dakota Ridge claimed the victory. Dakota Ridge, which is based in Littleton, Colo., took advantage of Cody Lunsford’s double and three bases-loaded walks to score five runs in the fourth inning and blow the game open. Corey Buckingham had two hits and an RBI for the Eagles (3-1). South Medford (2-1) faces Columbine High of Littleton, Colo., today. Jake Dean had a solid game for Grants Pass, going 3-for-3 with a home run and a double. Adam Donnelly added a two-run homer and finished 2-for-4.
