Morris earns state award for leadership Medford's Scott Morris has been honored as the state's economic development leader of the year. Morris, general manager of Avista Utilities, won the 1999 Governor's Economic and Community Development Award. He was selected from a statewide list of nominees by economic development professionals. "I was stunned," said Morris. "It was quite an honor." Morris was presented with the award at an annual economic development conference in Bend. Morris, 41, said the award is a testament to the area's economic development efforts more than his own. He said the high level of cooperation between Jackson and Josephine counties as well as local government officials makes the Rogue Valley uniquely successful in its efforts. "I really see it as an award for our community," he said. Morris was nominated for the award by Rob Pochert of Southern Oregon Regional Economic Development Inc. "Scott's commitment to Oregon's economic future, especially in the southern region of the state, is second to none," Pochert said. "His involvement in this region far exceeds just the interests of Avista Utilities." Morris spent six years on SOREDI's board, including one as president. Morris is president of The Chamber of Medford/Jackson County. He also sits on the boards of the Rogue Valley YMCA, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Providence Community Health Foundation Board and Rogue Community College's Advisory Board.
