The action was still hot and heavy in March of 1945 when Don Carroll and his fellow draftees were thrown into the breech as the Allies pushed toward the Rhine and victory over the Third Reich. Carroll, 88, retired to the Rogue Valley in 1992 and now lives three miles outside of Shady Cove. He remains among the youngest World War II veterans, a point driven home earlier this month when he participated in the Honor Flight of Oregon, visiting Washington D.C. Of the 28 Oregonian WWII veterans — 15 wheelchair bound — who went on the trip, he said, "one person was 95, two or three were 94, a few more 93 and only one other was less than 90." Fighting had long ended and occupation activities begun when Carroll's tour of duty ran out. "There weren't any cheering crowds when I came out," he recalled. "I didn't join the VFW or those kind of things, but I did what I was supposed to do when I got drafted and was honorably discharged." Perhaps that made the series of acknowledgements he and his comrades received en route to Washington all the more memorable. At Midway Airport in Chicago, 60 or 70 Navy trainees heading to Pensacola, Fla., formed an honor guard with the veterans passing between them. "They were all saluting," Carroll said. "On the other side were 300 to 400 people applauding." When they arrived at Dulles International Airport, there was a similar response. "The only thing you could do is mouth 'thank you,'" he said. "There wasn't a dry eye anywhere; I didn't expect that at all." While the World War II Memorial was the foremost objective of the trip, Carroll paid special attention to the Vietnam Memorial. Carroll was an agriculture teacher at King City High School, midway between Monterey and San Luis Obispo in the 1960s. One of his students was drafted, sent to Vietnam and killed shortly after he arrived. "I went to the Vietnam wall to find his name," he said. "I knew about where it was. I never really got involved in politics, but the crap those soldiers received when they got back really bothered me." The similarity of timelines with his former student wasn't lost on Carroll, who turned 18 in June 1944. He was drafted in September 1944. He had two brothers, one a Marine who suffered a leg wound and became a drill instructor at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and the other a member of the Air Corps. "Every fifth draftee went to the Navy, all others went to the Army," said Carroll, who reported to Fort Robinson in Arkansas for basic training. The German army, however, launched a counter-offensive that December, which led to defense of Bastogne, Belgium, and what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. "Our basic training was cut down by three weeks," Carroll said, and he was soon on a train bound for Camp Shanks, N.Y. He spent Christmas aboard a troop ship loaded with 8,000 men during a 13-day Atlantic crossing. They arrived in South Hampton, England, and soon boarded a landing craft for tanks to cross the English Channel to La Harve, France. He was among a small group assigned to the 42nd Infantry Division. After a three-day trip in trucks, he joined the 222nd Regiment in Southern France. Carroll's unit remained in foxholes until March 15, 1945, when the 7th Army began its final drive into Germany. Raised a few miles southwest of Chicago, Carroll was easily persuaded to head for California when he left the service. "Going to California was like dying and going to heaven," he said. "They had everything in the world, and in the late 1940s you couldn't find a better spot with the big cities, weather and everything else." Although he annually attends the Memorial Day ceremony in Eagle Point, during the intervening seven decades Carroll didn't relive the past with fellow WWII veterans until he learned about the Honor Flight this year. Local Honor Flight participants are invited to meet with U.S. Rep. Greg Walden on Capitol Hill. They are presented with flags that have flown over the Capitol in their honor and given copies of Congressional Record statements in their honor. Honor Flights commenced in 2010, financed with private donations. All WWII veterans are eligible for the trip. There is no cost, although a companion is charged about $900 for the trip.
