I don't feel it's necessarily an issue, I think it's a philosophy. I think the city needs to be more proactive on some of the issues facing the city instead of reactive. When I go door to door, I hear certain issues, and (there) doesn't appear to be anything happening on the council on these issues. The number one issue I hear from people is probably transients going into neighborhoods and making it difficult for homeowners to have a better standard of living. What can be done about that is study what other cities do. I mean, we don't have to reinvent the wheel here. Do you think recreational marijuana should be legalized? I think it's interesting, obviously. Really, it's up to the voters. I don't know if it's going to pass. It looks really 50/50. To be honest, I don't love it, but I don't really like our current situation. We have a 50-year war on drugs that has only resulted in locking people up and not making anything safer. I am cautiously supportive. Should the city continue its ban on medical marijuana dispensaries? We have to follow state law. We can take a look at what other cities have done, but we can't say we're not going to have them because state law doesn't allow that. How should the city deal with homeless people who cause problems in the parks? There are other communities our size that have these kind of issues. We need to see what works and what doesn't. As far as the feeding in the park, the city cannot regulate it. If people want to feed, they can feed them on public land. No matter where something gets put, the people in the area aren't going to like it, and everyone's solution is going to be, 'Put it somewhere I'm not.'  How would you be different as a leader? Making change isn't something I'm new to. I was in the military for nine years, and I had sort of a reputation for taking on certain issues instead of being a 'yes-man.' You have to find the issue, but you've got to be pragmatic. In reality, you're one of eight. If you're the guy screaming, no one's going to listen. I lived in poverty my entire life until I joined the military. I don't have a family background with money in it. I'm always ear-to-the-ground. I care more about knocking on doors and meeting people and hearing their views on what should be done.
