By Damian Mann Mail Tribune November 06. 2014 4:24PM Medford City Council approves new parking lot The City Council on Thursday unanimously approved a $249,890 contract with Vitus Construction Inc. to develop a new 41-space parking lot at the corner of Oakdale Avenue and 10th Street for use by city employees. The parking lot will be built before the city starts construction on a new police headquarters that will occupy an existing city parking lot on Ivy Street. As part of the parking lot project, the city will replace sidewalks and install low-energy lighting. To make way for the parking lot, the city removed a giant sequoia tree. Vitus submitted the lowest bid out of six companies. The highest bid was from Batzer Construction at $314,525. The city expects to begin construction of the new police station in April. The 47,292-square-foot police headquarters will be three stories tall, with the entrance facing Ivy Street near the corner of 10th Street. A secure parking garage for police employees and vehicles also will be built next to the police station The City Council on Thursday looked at the latest design, which has elements of both the Lithia headquarters on Riverside Avenue and the new One West Main corporate office building.  The police headquarters and a parking garage have a budget of $18.8 million, paid through a 30-year bond that will be paid off through a hike in utility fees.  The city employee lot and a new parking garage for the new Medford police headquarters on Ivy Street should free up more on-street parking around City Hall, officials said.
