South Medford senior Logan Boyd had just tied up the opening game of a Southern Oregon Conference twin bill with a two-run single in the top of the seventh, and Weiss came on in relief needing to get all three outs to halt the Panther rally. The senior right-hander quickly managed to get two strikeouts and a groundout to keep the game at 5-all, then reached safely to lead off the bottom of the seventh when South center fielder Dan Chancler couldn’t haul in a deep fly ball to the fence. Crater (9-10, 7-8 SOC) then advanced Weiss to third on two put-outs, and Schmidt took care of the rest with a game-winning, two-run homer to right field for a 7-5 triumph in the opener. South (15-5, 11-4) rebounded for a 9-2 win in Game 2. Advertisement "There’s not a whole lot to say," Crater coach Jim Powell said of Schmidt’s blast. "He just got in there and clutched up and got it done." Powell also credited Weiss’ outstanding work in relief for the Comets even being able to have such an opportunity to win in the end. "That’s a senior that just gutted it up and did what he had to do," said Powell. "That gave us a chance to come in and do something because that really fired us up." The homer was Schmidt’s second of the game. The junior also belted a three-run shot in a four-run first inning to help the Comets take an early lead, and was 2-for-3 in Game 2. Chuck Grabowski was 2-for-4 with one RBI in Game 1 for Crater, which made the most of its seven hits and was aided by South’s four errors. The last-gasp heroics by Crater spoiled what otherwise was a stellar game for Boyd, who was 4-for-4 for South. Chancler and Mark Austad added two hits for the Panthers, who had 11 overall. South rebounded in the nightcap as Boyd was 2-for-3 with a solo home run and Chancler, Justin Meyer and Jared Adamson each were 2-for-4. Chancler drove the first pitch of the nightcap over the fence to get the Panthers off to a fast start. NORTH MEDFORD 6-10, KLAMATH UNION 2-0 — North Medford starting pitchers Cole Rohrbough and Josh Suarez combined to allow only three hits and the Black Tornado (17-3, 12-3 SOC) belted out nine extra-base hits in sweeping a twin bill with Klamath Union. Rohrbough struck out 10 and allowed two hits in seven innings of work, retiring the last 10 Pelican batters in a row to secure the opening-game win. Kyle Williamson was 3-for-4 and Abe Eubank 2-for-3, with both driving in two runs. A two-run double by Williamson followed up a two-run single by Darren Bruhns in a sixth-inning surge that put North on top for good. In Game 2, Suarez struck out nine and allowed only one hit — a single by Christian Anderson on the first pitch of the game — in the six-inning affair. Tony Salamone was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, Eubank 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, Suarez 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Logan Odom 2-for-4 with one RBI in the nightcap for North. ROSEBURG 10-8, ASHLAND 0-7 — At Ashland, third-ranked Roseburg used a relay from center field to throw out the would-be tying run in the bottom of the seventh in Game 2 to secure a Southern Oregon Conference sweep. Roseburg (16-4, 14-1 SOC) led 8-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before Ashland broke through with five runs against Roseburg starter Eric Thompson. Tyson Senestraro started the rally with a leadoff double and Steve Jorgensen walked. Both advanced on a groundout and Ben Morris was walked to load the bases for Justin Meza, who responded with a two-run double. Robert Bruce then advanced to first and a run scored on his strikeout when the pitch got away from catcher Justin Bruggeman. Ashland (4-16, 2-13) tacked on two more runs on an error and a wild pitch to make it 8-5. In the seventh, Aaron San Nicholas reached safely for Ashland with a one-out single and, one out later, Bruce reached on an infield single. Jason Coburn then blasted a shot over Keitzman’s head in center field and to the wall to plate two runs, but was called out on a close play at home after being waved in for a thrilling finish. In Game 1, Keitzman struck out nine and allowed three hits in the six-inning shutout. The junior also joined teammate Mitchell Nelson in belting out solo home runs to lead the Indians’ attack. GRANTS PASS 4-21, EAGLE POINT 3-3 — At Eagle Point, Grants Pass scored 20 runs in two innings to blow by Eagle Point in the second game of an SOC doubleheader sweep at The Yard. The Cavemen exploded for 10 runs in both the fifth and sixth innings on 15 hits, including a home run each from Patrick Allen, Ben Zamora and Jake Dean. Allen finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Dean went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Grants Pass (10-8, 10-5 SOC). In Game 1, Grants Pass senior Nolan Morgan had seven strikeouts and Adam Donnelly went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two runs scored. Craig Dolmage added two hits for the Cavemen. For Eagle Point, Nick Staller went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the opener, while Shasta Bateman added seven strikeouts for the Eagles (5-15, 2-13). Eagle Point coach Tom Britton’s suspension stemming from last Saturday’s controversial loss to Roseburg was overturned following Britton’s appeal.
