Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 21, 2005 Effort to quell Blossom fire sends smoke into the valley Smoke from the Blossom fire crept into the Rogue Valley on Saturday evening, creating a thick haze and obscuring the horizon. The smoke is from burnout operations conducted by fire crews in the Mount Bolivar area. These burnouts run from Diamond Peak west to Mount Bolivar and August Knob. In an attempt to establish a fire line along the fire’s northwest flank, crews burnt a 2.5-mile stretch of land along forest road 32-9-31 that sent up a huge plume of smoke, which has drifted into nearby towns. "I haven’t gotten any word of new fires," said Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Brian Ballou. "A strong westerly wind blew the smoke into the area." The smoke could continue through the weekend, officials said. According to the Pacific Northwest National Incident Management Team 2 Web site, the Blossom Complex Fire, was sparked by lightning on July 21 and has consumed 9,317 acres. No structures have been destroyed. The Rogue River Ranch and the Marial Lodge on the river remain evacuated as the fire is within one mile of the structures, officials said. More than 1,800 firefighters are working at the scene. The fire is 40 percent contained and has cost $21, 336, 763 in resources through Saturday.
