Health Watch: Fuel up on carbs before workouts MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 28, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Nov. 28, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Tip of the Week When your car runs out of fuel, it doesn't run properly. When your body runs out of fuel, the same thing happens. To avoid empty tank syndrome, fuel with carbohydrates pre-workout. 1. Coffee is not a fuel: Trust us, we love ourselves a big cup of coffee in the morning as much as the next person. But a cup of coffee on an empty stomach provides no nutrients and isn't doing your body any favors at the gym. Think of coffee as your stimulant for groggy days, but you still need to pair it with the proper carbs to maximize your exercise efforts! 2. Fruit is fuel: Fruit is a great pre-workout snack. The simple carbs in fruit have that release sugars into your body for an almost immediate boost. If you don't usually eat before a workout or your stomach is sensitive, go with a banana because it is loaded with easily digestible carbs. Plus, a bit of extra potassium in your day is always a good thing! 3. Healthy grains are fuel: Get on the healthy grain train! A bowl of oatmeal is a wise choice before a workout because the B vitamins convert the carbs from oatmeal into energy. Another powerful, snack to try is a simple slice of bread paired with peanut butter. But make sure to skip the refined white processed stuff and go with whole grain. 4. A smoothie is fuel: Smoothies are easy on the stomach and easy to make! Basically, a perfect pre-workout drink! Pick healthy carbs like fruits and greens to get that energy boost your exercise needs and then add protein from almond milk or Greek yogurt. — Life Fitness Number to Know 900,000: About 900,000 Americans get pneumococcal pneumonia each year, nearly half of whom end up in the hospital. Between 5 and 7 percent of people affected with pneumococcal pneumonia die each year in the U.S. — Brandpoint Children’s Health Staying informed about ADHD: As of 2011, 6.4 million children in the U.S. had ever been diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD is one of the most common childhood neurologic disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms of ADHD may include difficulty paying attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. While ADHD can't be “cured,” health care providers who treat children with ADHD have a range of options to help manage the disorder, including behavioral therapy, parent and child education, and medication. — Brandpoint Senior Health Know your risk of contracting pneumonia: Adults over age 50 considered at increased risk for pneumonia include those with certain underlying health problems, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, asthma, congestive heart failure and sickle cell anemia. Vaccination is an important step to help protect against pneumococcal pneumonia. Talk to your doctor to learn more about getting up to date with all appropriate vaccinations. — Brandpoint New Research Short-term therapy reduces suicide rates: A new study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University has found that short-term therapy may have a significant impact in reducing a person’s likelihood of repeated suicide attempts. The researchers analyzed data from suicide prevention clinics in Denmark that have been offering counseling to patients since 1992. The researchers found that five years after getting counseling, suicide rates were down 26 percent among people who underwent therapy. — More Content Now MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 28, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
