I have heard it calling, but have yet to see it flying or perched on a building. — No name given The sounds you are hearing are not coming from a hawk at all. A device that emits hawk-like sounds is at the James A. Redden Federal Courthouse. The historic brick building at 310 W. Sixth St. is home to U.S. District Court in Medford. The courthouse is across the street from the Holly Theatre. The sounds are meant to scare away pigeons since hawks prey on pigeons, especially in urban settings. Hawks do live in downtown Medford and can sometimes be seen circling about, hunting for prey. As to whether the device is effective, pigeons can still be seen on occasion landing on the courthouse roof and other architectural features. Here at the Mail Tribune offices — one block away — we've noticed the pigeons getting friendly with the decoy owls perched atop our building.
