Jill Hillhouse and Jordan Wagman are hoping that their new book, “The Best Baby Food: 125 Healthy and Delicious Recipes for Babies & Toddlers,” will point moms and dads to a wholesome path for their children. “Food is perhaps our most valuable tool for promoting our health. All that food is just generating those new cells and helping them grow, so it’s incredibly important what you put in their mouths,” said Hillhouse, a registered holistic nutritionist. “If we relax and just use whole foods and do it ourselves, then you’re probably doing the right thing.” She and Wagman, a trained chef, used their personal experiences raising their own children to put together a book that emphasizes whole-food eating. The book’s easy-to-make, gluten-free dishes offer an alternative to store-bought baby foods, which often contain additives that lower the nutrition value, Hillhouse said. The homemade recipes can work to expand babies’ palettes, keeping them from becoming picky eaters as they get older. For example, Green Bean Puree with Fresh Basil and Honeydew, Blueberry and Mint Puree use familiar vegetable and fruit flavors while introducing herbs. “If we can start them with whole foods, in terms of a great vegetable or fruit puree, as opposed to a spoonful of ice cream, then we’re not sensitizing them to the sweet taste. If we acquire too much of a sweet taste early on, then when we introduce bitter foods, we’re going to reject them,” Hillhouse said. “The Best Baby Food” is divided into recipes for ages 6 to 9 months, when babies are starting solid foods; ages 9 to 12 months, when they’re establishing preferences; and 12-month-olds to toddlers. There is also a section for snacks and desserts. Hillhouse said the ingredients can be found in any grocery store, and a blender is the only special equipment required. All the recipes include chef and nutritionist tips and health information. The front section of the book addresses hot food topics, including organics, genetically modified organisms, raw foods, fats, gluten, allergies and going vegetarian, to help parents make informed choices. Roasted Summer Fruit Makes about 4 cups This recipe works for virtually any fruit and can be served with breakfast, lunch or dinner. Ingredients: 2 organic peaches, pitted 1½ cups organic raspberries 1½ cups organic or wild blueberries 1½ cups whole organic strawberries, stems removed 2 organic plums, pitted 2 Tbsp. evaporated cane juice sugar or coconut sugar Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In prepared baking dish, combine peaches, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, plums and sugar, stirring until fruit is evenly coated with sugar. Roast in preheated oven until fruit is soft and nicely caramelized, about 1 hour. Mash or cut to desired consistency. Let cool until warm to the touch before serving or transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month. Carrot Purée Makes about 1 cup Ingredients: 1½ cups coarsely chopped peeled carrots 1 cup filtered water In a saucepan, combine carrots and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer until carrots are very soft, about 25 minutes. Transfer to blender or use an immersion blender in the saucepan. Purée until smooth. Let cool until warm to the touch before serving or transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
