COLLEGE ROUNDUP Oregon track sweeps at Pac-12s Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 17, 2015 at 8:54 PM Posted May. 17, 2015 at 8:54 PM » Social News LOS ANGELES — The Oregon men and women’s track and field teams pulled together to sweep the Pac-12 Championships for a seventh straight season Sunday at Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA. The men’s team finished with 152 points for a conference-record ninth straight title, 31 ahead of second-place USC. The women’s team edged out the Trojans by three points, 185-182. The meet had its fair share of drama as both the USC men and women, who entered the meet with No. 5 and No. 2 rankings by the USTFCCCA, surged to temporary leads late in the day after the running of the 200 meters, where the Trojans scored big points. The Ducks, however, had too much firepower in too many different events and responded with the men scoring in the triple jump, discus, 5,000 and 4x400 to regain the lead, while the women had enough left with nine points in the 5,000 and eight more in the 4x400. The men’s team race was not decided until the second-to-last race on the track when the men’s distance crew slammed the door with a dominating performance in the 5,000. The women, however, came down to the wire as Oregon needed a third-place finish in the 4x400 and did one better, finishing second. Jasmine Todd and Sasha Wallace were the top point-getters for the Oregon women, as Todd scored in a total of five events at the Championships, winning two individual titles on Sunday and earning Athlete of the Meet honors. Wallace notched three second-place finishes on the day. Both were part of the second-place women’s 4x100 team and went 1-2 in the triple jump with Todd out front at 42-11.75, the third-best mark in school history, followed by a lifetime-best performance from Wallace at 42-3.25. Todd won her second title of the day in the 100, where she crossed the finish line in 11.18 and finished the weekend with a fourth-place finish in the 200 (23.21). Wallace also broke her own school record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.00, taking second in a photo finish behind USC’s Dior Hall who ran 12.99. Edward Cheserek gave the Ducks their final individual title in the 5,000. For Oregon State, Melissa Ausman placed eighth in the discus. Ausman's scoring mark came on the fifth of her six throws and was her third-longest of the season. The Beavers took 11th place with six points, finishing ahead of California. Baseball OREGON STATE 12, STANFORD 3 : At Stanford, Calif., Gabe Clark homered, KJ Harrison drove in two and Joe Gillette had three hits as No. 19 Oregon State defeated Stanford. The win gave the Beavers a sweep of the Cardinal and pushed Oregon State’s record to 36-14-1 overall and 17-9-1 in Pac-12 Conference play. The sweep is the Beavers’ third straight over the Cardinal. OSU opened the game’s scoring with Clark’s eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot that easily cleared the fence in left, in the second inning. It came on the heels of Joe Gillette’s first single of the afternoon. The Cardinal pulled to within one with a solo run in the third, but the Beavers scored three in the fifth. OSU scored its first run of the inning when Dane Lund reached on a bunt single and an errant throw enabled Christian Donahue to score. Two batters later, Harrison drove in two with a double off the base of the wall in left. OREGON 5, UTAH 1 : At Salt Lake City, Oregon swept a Pac-12 series for the first time this season by beating Utah, and the Ducks' timing couldn't have been better. It was the team's sixth straight win, with a spot in the postseason possibly on the line given a strong final week to the regular season. Unlike the previous two nights, when the Ducks (34-22, 14-13) won with dramatic comebacks, they never trailed Sunday. Jakob Goldfarb opened the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Grebeck. UO starter Josh Graham (4-1) surrendered the tying run in the fourth, but that was it over seven innings of work. The Ducks retook the lead in the fifth when Mark Karaviotis singled in Matt Eureste, and Mitchell Tolman provided insurance by doubling in Grebeck in the sixth.
