The Ducks trailed 27-18 and faced third-and-10 at their own 41-yard line when Marcus Mariota got free from the defense and flipped a pass to running back Royce Freeman, who got 17 yards for a first down. Five plays later, Mariota threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Devon Allen to get Oregon within 27-25. That was still the score when Oregon faced third-and-9 at its own 42-yard line before Mariota got out of trouble and scrambled 11 yards for the first down. That led to a 37-yard touchdown pass to Keanon Lowe that put the Ducks ahead 32-27 heading into the fourth quarter. “I was just trying to make plays for my team, I can’t really explain some of those things,” Mariota said. “It’s just instinct. Some of that stuff just kind of happens.” Oregon coach Mark Helfrich gave his best explanation following the win. “Genetics,” he said. “You will have to ask Toa and Alana Mariota the answer to that.” The Ducks may not have seen some of those plays from Mariota before, but they have come to expect the redshirt junior to make a play in any situation. “He got out of a couple predicaments that were pretty impressive,” offensive coordinator Scott Frost said. “He’s a playmaker and a couple plays he made kept drives alive for us and then we finished them.” Frost said he always believes Mariota can make something happen on the ground or in the air if a play breaks down. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in Marcus that he’ll make the right decision with the ball and also a lot of confidence that if we miss one guy in pass protection, that he can make them miss,” Frost said. Mariota improved to 25-3 as a starter at Oregon, matching the career record of Joey Harrington. Mariota is 8-2 in games against ranked opponents with both losses to Stanford. Michigan State was ranked No. 7, matching Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl as the highest-ranked opponent that Mariota has defeated and he said the Spartans’ defense ranked among the best he has faced. “They were very aggressive,” he said. “All around, they made good tackles and played hard. I can go down a long list, it was a tough defense to play against. We expected to get stalled on a couple drives because we knew going in they were a good defense. To battle through that and get some points says a lot about our offense and plenty about the character of this team.” Mariota was named Pac-12 offensive player of the week Monday after going 17-for-28 for 318 yards and three scores, including 7-for-12 with two touchdown passes in the second half. He added nine carries for 42 yards. Mariota has backed up his preseason hype as one of the favorites for the Heisman Trophy by completing 31-of-48 passes for 585 yards and six touchdowns in two games. He has also run for 85 yards and a touchdown. Despite playing without his top four receivers from last year, Mariota completed passes to seven receivers last week. Eleven players have at least one catch this season. “They are very dynamic, explosive,” Mariota said of his receivers. “We have to continue to find ways to get those guys the ball. Once it is in their hands, they are explosive. I’m sure coach Helfrich and coach Frost are figuring out some good stuff for us and we just have to go out there and execute.” So far this season, he has set the Oregon career records for total offense (8,479), touchdown passes (69) and total touchdowns (85). “I should have to pay to watch that guy play,” Helfrich said.
