Cant get KMVU? Blame FCC From my rooftop antennae, I can receive from Medford ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS. I would like to know why we in Cave Junction cannot pick up KMVU. I was under the impression that all networks had to broadcast in the clear. James R., Cave Junction The answer, James, has to do with translators, digital television and the Federal Communications Commission. When you watch a Medford TV station in Cave Junction, the signal you receive is most likely one relayed by a translator, says Peter Rogers, general manager of KMVU. Direct broadcast into Cave Junction is difficult because of all the mountains in the way. KMVU, which is only six years old, doesnt have a Cave Junction translator. Why? Because, says Rogers, the FCC has in recent years put a freeze on issuing licenses for new translators of the type currently in use. It has done so to concentrate on regulating the coming transition to digital television. That transition is going to require numerous new channel and translator assignments. The translators used by the other Medford stations were built before the freeze. KMVU does have a translator in Grants Pass, and Rogers says some Cave Junction viewers are able to pick up his station by that route, on Channel 45. By the way, hes pleased that you want to watch his station. ("Since You Asked'' is a daily feature in the Mail Tribune that answers questions from readers on virtually any topic of general interest.
