Originally believed to be 75 acres, Tuesday’s 7 p.m. fire started on private land behind Logtown Cemetery and burned onto Bureau of Land Management property, said Dennis Turco, fire prevention specialist with Oregon Department of Forestry. With the help of 25 engines and water-hauling trucks and four bulldozers, six fire crews from ODF, Jackson County Fire District No. 9 and private companies lined the fire late Tuesday. Officials didn’t declare the flames contained until Wednesday afternoon. "For a fire to reach that size in the evening this time of year, we could be in for a difficult season," Turco said. The fire was under investigation Wednesday. No structures were damaged and no one was injured. Fire danger is at high levels right now, and no open burning is allowed, Turco added. July marks the start of ODF’s annual public regulated use closure restrictions effective on all state, county, private, and BLM lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry in Jackson and Josephine counties. Campfires are prohibited, except in designated locations, such as county and state parks. Fireworks are prohibited in areas of flammable vegetation such as dry grass, brush and forested areas. Use of vehicles off improved roads is prohibited. Smoking in wildland areas will be permitted only in enclosed vehicles while on improved roads free of flammable vegetation. Between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., the public cannot use chain saws or mow dry grass. Non-agricultural, non-commercial use of power driven machinery and cutting, welding and grinding metal in areas of flammable vegetation also is prohibited.
