The howl and grumbling of the older generation was considerable. But the new clarity overrode the loss of archaic poetic familiarity and we youngsters were more apt to pay better attention. Now look where we are. The older generation of the 1950s would be astounded at the proliferation of translations, paraphrases and revisions we have today. I predict the OSF is on to something, and history and the attraction of future modernized language plays will prove them right. I might even start attending again. Dan Mackay Ashland Practicing authenticity After the first Democratic primary debate, mainstream media pundits fell all over themselves declaring Hillary Clinton the “winner.” Hyperbolic praise included words like “commanding,” “self-assured,” “poised.” All because she spent two weeks realigning her positions to match national polls and unsuccessfully practicing what comes naturally to Bernie Sanders: authenticity. The pundits’ conclusions are at best suspect when one considers: In every state, according to Google Trends, Sanders was, post-debate, the most Googled candidate. Sanders was the most-discussed candidate on Facebook Online polls by MSNBC, Daily Kos, Time, Slate, CNN/Time, Drudge, The Street and CNN’s Facebook all gave the win to Sanders. Focus groups at CNN, Fusion and Fox News said Bernie had won. Whether Clinton or Sanders is considered the “winner” is nonsense to anyone but those with a dumbed-down view of politics as a personality contest or sporting event. One must ask, however, why mainstream pundits are so eager to promote Clinton as the people’s choice. Could it be that, assured of having “embedded” access to Washington news, their pockets are lined by the “centrist” DNC establishment? Could it be their belief that sycophantic praise will assure them qui-pro-quo access to the Oval Office? Is everyone just “practicing” authenticity? Andy Seles Ashland Yes for fire, ambulance Please support Rogue River Fire and Ambulance Service by voting yes on the Rogue River District No. 1 levy renewal. A yes vote renews our existing levy and preserves fire and ambulance service at its current level of excellence. The new levy will not increase your current tax rate. The levy asks for 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed value; this request has remained the same since 2000. The district is the sole provider of firefighting and emergency services for the community. This five-year levy will not increase the total assessment rate currently imposed on property within the district. The district will use the revenue to continue to provide the high-quality fire and ambulance service residents have come to expect. We responded to 1,778 emergency calls in 2014. Please vote yes so we can continue our excellence in meeting your health and safety needs. John Bond Rogue River Fire District Board of Directors A 'selfish' Ashlander Mr. Horner's letter (Oct. 13) supporting the LNG project is both long on insult and short on fact, and begs response. I, too, have read the many letters in opposition to the proposed pipeline. A common thread that he somehow fails to notice is how many letters came from all over Jackson County arguing against the use of eminent domain. Established as a last-resort option for the completion of public works projects to benefit "the majority," it is being used in this case to line the pockets of transnational corporations (Veresen and Williams Pipeline). This is one area in which the people from the hills of Ashland, the forests of Trail and the river frontage of Shady Cove can all agree: This is an abuse of corporate power over private property rights. I wonder how Mr. Horner would react to a neighbor's attempt to seek an easement across his property. Selfishness and smugness may exist in a certain Jacksonville neighborhood as well.
