Jesse Fretz gave the Challengers a 1-0 lead at halftime when he scored from about 15 yards out 13 minutes into the contest. Travis Cave took a pass from Troy Ferguson and tallied in the 43rd minute for Cascade Christian. After Jerry Shim narrowed the gap for Milo in the 63rd, the Challengers’ Kallen Rechberg scored six minutes later on an assist from Tyler Hopkins. Women’s Soccer SAN MARCOS 2, SOUTHERN OREGON 1: At San Marcos, Calif., Southern Oregon took the 15th-ranked team in the NAIA to a second extra period before falling. Presley Lambert provided SOU (1-4 overall) with an early lead when she scored her first goal of the season in the 18th minute. The Cougars (2-0-1) tied it on Amy Alber’s header 10 minutes later and won it in during the 102nd minute when Amy Young converted another header. Sarah Campbell was responsible for assisting the winner, and Megan Pfrunder and Katie Largent were both credited on the equalizer. Setting up Lambert’s score was Megan McArthur, who now has two assists to go along with two goals. The Raiders wouldn’t put another shot on goal. San Marcos had nine, and a 13-3 advantage in shots overall. Kylie Moltzen recorded four saves and Devon Walker three for SOU. Football MASON, ATANDA HONORED: Southern Oregon running back Melvin Mason was named the NAIA football offensive player of the week, and Raider volleyball player Motade Atanda was chosen Cascade Conference offensive player of the week. Mason, a sophomore, helped 22nd-ranked SOU (2-0) upset No. 2 Carroll, 38-35. Mason scored a career-high three rushing touchdowns as he carried 27 times for 202 yards — the second-best mark of his career. Mason won the same award after last season’s third week, when he hit up Sacramento State for 290 total yards and three TDs. He was also selected as the Frontier Conference player of the week on Monday. In his last six games dating to 2013, Mason is averaging 117.5 yards per contest and 6.7 per carry. Atanda, a senior outside hitter, turned 60 percent of her attacks into kills while going for 13 and 17 in Raider sweeps of Corban and Northwest Christian, respectively, last Thursday and Friday. Her attacking average was .440 for the matches, and she also picked up 25 digs. The Raiders (8-2 overall, 2-0 CCC) were named the co-Cascade Conference team of the week, sharing the honor with the Oregon Tech volleyball team.
