Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 20, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 20, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 20, 1915 NOTHING HEARD FROM DESPERADO No word has been received from John Austin Hooper, desperado, who escaped from the Josephine County Jail at Grants Pass last Sunday, since he bid goodbye Sunday to E.E. Kroh near Rogue River, after riding in his machine. Hooper, according to the Greek who escaped with him from the county jail, is headed for the Klamath River district, where he has many friends among the Indians. It is now believed that Hooper is more likely to have headed for The Dalles, where he has a "sweetheart." No reward has been offered for the capture of Hooper. It has never been explained to the public why Hooper, with a life sentence at Folsom California Prison before, and a charge of bank robbing, street car hold ups and other national crimes hanging over him, was taken to Grants Pass and held for robbing the Southern Pacific depot of $132. WOMAN DRUNK FOR TWO WEEKS Mrs. Laura Graves appeared again today before the police on a charge of drunkenness and gadding the streets at all hours of the day and night. The police allege that Mrs. Graves has been in a state of intoxication for two weeks, and that she sleeps in the lumber yards, vacant buildings and associates with tramps. Mrs. Graves denies all these allegations and avers that most of her woes are due to gossip, though not denying that she has an inherited fondness for liquor. The police warned Mrs. Graves that if she was again hailed before the police, she would be given a 30 day's sentence in the county jail. The woman told the police that she could "behave herself" if men with invitations to go "joyriding" would keep away. According to the police Mrs. Graves was brought to this city from California by a middle aged man, and that they lived as man and wife on a five acre tract east of town for six months. Mrs. Graves' fondness for liquor caused complaint to be filed by her neighbors, and disgusted her companion, who left without a farewell. Since then the woman has been living as best she could, as the hostess of alley "can rushing parties." She is a confirmed alcoholic, about 30 years of age. She says she has a husband and two children "somewhere" in Arizona.
