Ashland blanks KU in SOC tennis ASHLAND -- Ashland's Ari Zaslow missed out on a day's pay from work and a prime tune-up for Thursday's boys district tennis tournament in an unfortunate turn of events Saturday at Hunter Park. Hoping to face off with Klamath Union's Reid Arthur in No. 1 singles, Zaslow instead remained on the sidelines as Arthur's back injury kept him sidelined as well. Regardless, Zaslow got to see a fine display of tennis first-hand as Ashland breezed past KU, 9-0, to run the Grizzlies' record to 9-1. Shane Lloyd moved into the No. 1 singles spot for Ashland and posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chris Hurley in the closest of all singles matches. Jonathon Willing, Jer-Wei Chang, Cory Lescher and Brendan Curry also posted singles wins for the Grizzlies. "Cory Lescher played outstanding, and I thought Shane Lloyd played strong as well," said Ashland coach Dick Streng. The team of Evan Schleining and Kevin Spears kept up their winning ways with a nifty 10-1 win over the KU team of Hurley and Nate Ganong in an unconventional set agreed upon to save time and energy due to a later match the Pelicans had scheduled at South Medford. "They're playing quite well right now," Streng said of his No. 1 doubles tandem. "They worked hard this weekend, and hopefully they'll have their game in order a couple days next week, too." Track and Field GOTTSCHALKS INVITATIONAL - At Klamath Falls, Cascade Christian's Brandon Jasmin took first place in the shot put and discus for the Challengers at the 14-team event at Viking Stadium. Jasmin finished with a meet-best 158-2 in the discus and a 45-8 in shot put. Crook County won the boys' team title, while Klamath Union took fourth, Lakeview fifth, Mazama sixth, Henley eighth and Cascade Christian 10th. In girls, Bonanza grabbed the team title. The Pelicans finished third, Lakeview fifth, Henley eighth and Cascade Christian 15th. Traci Harris was the lone first-place finisher for the Challengers with a mark of 98-8 in discus.
