Now, the four musicians are playing together as Sonido Alegre, a band driven by Guy's original instrumentals and songs along with a few choice covers. Guy played with Rogue Valley rock, pop and soul bands In Flight and Heart and Soul for about 10 years, and Galloway has worked with David Pinsky and His Rhythm Kings. McCoy is a classically trained percussionist and works with Rogue Valley Symphony and the Britt Orchestra. Powers played Gypsy jazz with Flat Five String Band and Backporch Swing. The four-piece unit will perform what they call "music with Spanish flavor and flamenco flair" at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at RoxyAnn Winery, 3283 Hillcrest Road, Medford. Robbie DaCosta will open the show at 5 p.m. Admission is free. Call 541-776-2315. Guy kicked off a solo career in 2010 with an independent album of nuevo flamenco titled "Sakes Alive." He found inspiration for the project while taking winter breaks on beaches and hilltops in Mexico. He played solo for a long while before he and violinist Powers teamed up, and the two released "Sonido Alegre" — which translated to English means "a joyful sound" — in 2014. The album features original music composed on Guy's nylon-string guitar with Power's Gypsy violin. "I can get that Spanish flavor sound on nylon strings," Guy says. "I can also play funk, rock and '50s music on a nylon-stringed guitar. Adding Linda to the solo act changed the sound dynamic. I'm more of a rhythm guitarist than a lead. I have to have chords and song structure. Linda adds a lot of melody, and that allows me to play fingerstyle more percussively. There's some finger percussion required for flamenco sounds, and I focus more on chords and bass lines." Guy and Powers added Galloway to their music project about two years ago, and McCoy joined about six months ago. McCoy's work on cajon, Middle Eastern doumbek, castanets and shakers give the band's music more of that Spanish flavor. "It adds variety to our sound," Guy says. "It gives it an exotic element. And John's and Theresa's rhythm section has definitely added a lot to the sound. It filled it out and made it more danceable. There are people who want to hear music, and people who come out to dance. We try to play a little bit of both. The bass and percussion gives us that capability. I've played music for a long time, and I know a lot of songs. I try to read the crowd. We throw in some Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, a little funk music, some James Taylor, stuff like that." Many of Guy's originals are upbeat and played with a faster tempo, and the new rhythm section lends itself to that music as well. "It makes it more fun," Guy says. "This is growth for me. It's something new and creative. I'm producing something of myself, and I enjoy sharing it. Everyone in the band seems to enjoy and respect the music. That gives me a feeling of satisfaction. I always enjoy playing with other people, but it's hard to find those who want to play just your original music. It takes time to learn new material, and my originals are not that simple."
