Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 9, 2006 Since You Asked New laws get tough on bad drivers Can you tell me about the new traffic laws passed by the 2005 Legislature for the new year? — Constantine M., Provolt It looks like last year’s Legislature chose to tweak some of the laws on the books, instead of making drastic changes to them, Constantine. The following are a few laws that came into effect Jan. 1. Motorists can now have their driver’s licenses automatically revoked by the Department of Motor Vehicles after a third conviction for driving under the influence of intoxicants, according to a DMV press release. Previously, it rested on the courts to revoke a three-time offender’s license. Excessive speeding could equal a suspended driver’s license for up to 30 days. Drivers convicted of cruising more than 30 mph faster than the speed limit or by going 100 mph or faster may loose their driving privileges for nearly a month, officials said. Finally, drivers who enjoy watching "The Sopranos" while motoring down Interstate 5 will be ticketed. The new law states that all television screens must remain out of the driver’s view. The law exempts navigation systems, officials said. Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
