Forty-one years later the Medford couple shared their last moments on Robert's Harley-Davidson Tuesday morning when they were killed in an accident on a Utah highway. The couple left behind four sons and seven grandchildren. Ryan Barney, 35, said his parents had differing personalties in some aspects but they were inseparable when it came to the open road. "He rarely went on trips by himself," Ryan said. "I don't think he would have felt it was the same without her." The Barneys were on a road trip across the West when the crash occurred on U.S. Highway 40 west of Duchesne, Utah. According to a report by the Utah Highway Patrol, the Barneys, both 56, were riding east just after 10 a.m. when the driver of a pick-up turned in front of them. The driver of the truck, Ralph Keele, of West Jordan, Utah, told investigators he had seen the motorcyclists when he attempted to turn into a subdivision at 33910 West. But the 71-year-old man believed he had enough time to make the turn, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Luke Stradinger. The Barneys were both wearing helmets and motorcycle leathers. They were traveling an estimated 63 mph when they hit the side of the pickup. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The Barneys, who both grew up in Southern California, began dating in 1969 and moved to Medford in 1981. Ryan said his mother was a reserved woman of deep faith, but who enjoyed riding on the back of Harley-Davidsons and encouraged her children to jam out to hard rock music in their house. Music is a passion shared by all of the boys. "I think they wanted us here playing music because it kept us out of trouble," Ryan said from his parents' kitchen. "Dad didn't mind it because he was a rocker from the '70s." Robert worked in the trucking industry for 28 years, but his real love was motorcycles and Led Zeppelin. "We went to shows together and had a great time," Ryan said. "But he always said this generation's music didn't have a Led Zeppelin. And he was right." Erick Barney, 34, said his parents opened their home to a large circle of family and friends. "They were the universal parents," he said. "Everyone was welcome in their house." Erick said the outpouring of support in phone calls, e-mails, text messages and Facebook posts, has helped the family cope with their loss. "In all this terrible tragedy there's a lot of inspiration," he said. The crash remains under investigation. The Utah Highway Patrol said no citation had been issued as of Tuesday afternoon. Ryan's wife Melissa Barney, 34, said one thing she hoped people would learn from the crash is to keep an eye out for motorcyclists. "People should watch out for them when you are driving," she said. Another passion of Robert's was the sky-blue 1966 GMC pick-up parked outside his house near the couple's motorhome.
