Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend June 25, 2004 Central Point pilot listed in fair condition in ICU A Central Point pilot injured in Wednesday’s helicopter crash near Ruch is recovering in a Portland hospital. Michael Owen, 48, of Heather Lane, was awaiting surgery at Oregon Health Science University to repair a broken pelvis, said his brother, Steve Owen. OHSU staff listed Michael Owen in fair condition Thursday in the hospital’s intensive care unit. Owen was spraying herbicides under contract for Boise Cascade when his Bell-47 helicopter went down in the area of Woodrat Mountain just before 10 a.m. Wednesday. It was Owen’s second crash in the past decade. He injured his back in a 1994 accident while doing the same work for Boise near Gold Hill. Owen crawled out of the wreckage Wednesday before the craft caught fire. His 25-year-old son and another employee pulled him further away before calling for help on a cell phone. Mercy Flights paramedics took Owen to Rogue Valley Medical Center by helicopter. Firefighters extinguished the flaming remains of the Bell-47, which went down in an area burned by the Squires fire of 2002. Described by colleagues as an experienced pilot who has flown helicopters for more than 20 years, Owen is a partner in his family’s business, Pacific Air Research in White City. Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board said they are working with the Federal Aviation Administration to determine the accident’s cause. Their investigation could take as long as six months.
