Blankets, towels and clothing would replace some of the possessions they lost when fleeing domestic violence earlier this year. Church was among the only places that this 34-year-old woman dared frequent or face her husband’s wrath. A member of the congregation who escaped her own abusive relationship befriended the emotionally and physically battered woman. For two years, the woman and her friend — with assistance from a Community Works advocate — planned how the former could leave her marriage. A protection order and geographic distance from her ex-husband, who moved to the Midwest, give the woman and her sons, 10 and 12, a measure of security. Counseling and church attendance bring them peace. When asked recently what they wanted for Christmas, both boys replied that they hoped to help someone, just as their mother’s friend helped them. They want to cook a special dinner for her and their mother and could use a gift card for groceries. Next on their list was a comfortable, new chair for their mother’s room. For themselves, they wished for passes to the movies and Go Kart Hero. Comfort would come with some new blankets, twin-sized for the boys (plaid for the older one and brown for his brother). Their mother prefers a soothing blue hue, queen-sized. Both boys need new winter jackets in sizes 14 and 16. Assistance with their utility bill would light up the faces of mother and sons.
