Email Story to a Friend July 1, 2006 Licea pitches Mustangs to tourney win YAKIMA, Wash. — Ken Licea pitched a three-hitter as the Medford Mustangs assured themselves a spot in the semifinals of the Yakima Firecracker Tournament with a 12-2, six-inning victory over Bellevue, Wash., Honda on Friday. The Mustangs improved to 2-0 in pool play in the eight-team tournament at Parker Stadium and stretched their American Legion season mark to an impressive 22-1. The top two teams in each four-team pool advance to championship bracket play Sunday. Medford staked Licea to a five-run lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Dustin Smith scored on a wild pitch and Logan Boyd walked to fill the bases again. It appeared Bellevue pitcher Peter Rasanen might get out of the inning with minimal damage when he struck out the next two batters, but Ben Koziol and Derek Grieve each followed with two-run singles. Advertisement Eric Korsmo opened the second inning with a home run for last year's Washington state American Legion champion, then Licea retired 13 straight batters before Mick Johnson's one-out single in the sixth. Johnson scored Bellevue's second run on a single by Andy Kirchner. Abe Eubank connected for his third home run of the season with a two-run blast that capped a three-run fourth inning. In the sixth, the Mustangs scored one run and had the bases loaded with two outs when Ryan Odell hit a two-run single to center field to end the game. Koziol went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Mustangs' 14-hit attack. Grieve added two hits and three RBIs, while Odell and Smith each had two hits and combined for three RBIs. MAVERICKS TAKE TWO — At Roseburg, Shea Bethortha fired a one-hit shutout and Zack Earle belted an RBI double in the sixth inning for the game's only run as the North Medford Mavericks defeated Roseburg Pepsi 1-0 at the Roseburg Fourth of July Tournament. Bedortha finished with five strikeouts and just one walk. Earle and Hayden Wolfe fueled the Mavs' offense with two hits apiece. Later in the day, North Medford (18-5) needed extra innings to down North Salem 11-6. The Mavericks broke open that game in the top of the eighth inning when they exploded for five runs. Earle's two-run single and Bedortha's two-run double provided the key hits. Earle went 3-for-5 against North Salem, giving him five hits in nine at-bats on the day. COLTS EARN SPLIT — At Roseburg, the American Legion A South Medford Colts split a pair of pool play games in the six-team tournament. South Medford defeated the Roseburg Babe Ruth All-Stars 9-3, but dropped an 8-2 decision to Roseburg Pepsi. In the Colts' opener, Chris Granger led the attack with three hits, while Trent Smith, Jon Adamson and Patrick Thibeault added two hits each. Against Roseburg Pepsi, South Medford (5-7) hurt itself with six errors and stranded the bases loaded twice. Roseburg capitalized on three Colts errors to score four unearned runs in the first inning. Josh Camp and Adamson collected two hits each in Game 2. Holloway hit a solo home run in the first inning and Jesse Stevenson drilled a three-run double to fuel a 10-run second as the Southern Oregon Riverdogs rolled over the Redding Tigers at Harry and David Field. James Bowers chipped in with a two-run double and an RBI triple for Central Gray (1-3), with Brady Balducci and Nick Viscounty also driving in runs for the Medford team. Little League Softball AGE 13-14 DISTRICT 8 TOURNAMENT — At Gold Hill, Mallory Gacdol hit a double and triple and struck out five in four innings pitched as the Medford Nationals defeated Illinois Valley 15-5 in the tournament opener. For Illinois Valley, Brittney Burmett went 3-for-3 with a double.
