COLLEGE GOLF Northwestern's Wu chosen for NCAA field Freshman from Medford gets into New Haven Regional as first alternate Comment By Tim Trower Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Tim Trower Mail Tribune Posted May. 13, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Tim Trower Mail Tribune Posted May. 13, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Dylan Wu received a surprise when he walked out of a class at Northwestern on Monday. His golf coach called the freshman from Medford to inform him he’d been selected to play in the NCAA men’s championships. Wu, the Evanston, Ill., school’s top player this year — there is a fall season, then a spring season — was the first alternate among at-large individual selections. The top 45 players were originally chosen last week, along with 81 teams, to play at six regionals this weekend. However, a player withdrew from the New Haven Regional, opening the door for Wu. The 54-hole tournament is Thursday through Saturday at The Course at Yale in New Haven, Conn. Northwestern’s players had switched to “off-season” mode, said Wu. The Wildcats were seventh (of 14 teams) in the Big Ten championships, and the top six teams advanced to nationals. It was the first time in seven years Northwestern was left out. So the phone call telling the former St. Mary’s High standout he was picked, Wu said, was “a little unexpected.” “But, it’s a feeling of gratefulness,” he said, “just because I missed it by one spot. It showed it really was just one shot out of all the tournaments I played. One shot can guarantee you a spot and one shot can take you out. I’m really grateful to have the opportunity to play and hopefully continue my season. It was definitely a good surprise to have.” Wu led Northwestern with a 72.53 scoring average over 10 tournaments and 30 rounds. His best finish was in the fall, when he captured the loaded Gifford Collegiate hosted by UCLA with a 9-under-par score of 204. In the spring, he got off to a relatively slow start before reeling off three straight top-20 finishes, culminating with 18th place at the Big Ten championships. He also had placings of 12th at Ohio State’s Kepler Intercollegiate — where he played alongside Oregon State’s Kevin Murphy, a friend and rival from high school and junior play — and 20th at The Boilermaker, hosted by Purdue. “The spring season, I didn’t really have a great highlight,” said Wu. “I definitely had some momentum going at the end of the year after a couple of poor events early in the spring. My game was in spurts, playing well but just making too many mistakes, especially at the Big Ten championships.” Wu flew to Hartford, Conn., Tuesday night and was to get in a practice round today. He’ll play in a group with the other at-large individuals, teeing off last each day. There are 14 teams and five individuals at New Haven. The top five teams and the top individual not on an advancing team move on to the NCAA championships May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. “I’ve definitely been playing better this spring and showing sparks of how I was playing at the end of the fall,” said Wu. “I knew I was leaving little stuff out there, but I think I’m trending in the right direction now.” For the season, Wu had nine rounds at par or better, including a 67 and two 68s in his final four tourneys. In high school, Wu captured the last two Class 3A/2A/1A state championships, spurring the Crusaders to four straight titles.
