The suspects stole an estimated $6,780 worth of property, which also included video and audio equipment and other personal belongings, according to a Medford police report. Kids Unlimited officials said the iPads had tournament software that they planned to use at the upcoming 10th annual Singler Open Youth Basketball Tournament, which is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The tournament will feature 200 teams and thousands of players from Oregon, Washington, California and Nevada, and is described as one of the organization's largest fundraisers. Officials had planned to use the software to assist players and coaches with tournament logistics. Kids Unlimited Executive Director Tom Cole said the software was primarily to allow people to get updates on the tournament as it goes. The organization was able to replace the stolen electronics by installing the software onto other tablets — some they owned already, others that were donated by staffers. "That gets us through the weekend, which was our immediate crisis," Cole said. "Then we'll go through the process of the insurance claims. The responsiveness of it was a part of what I think makes the event unique. That people pull together." The iPads were also important learning tools for charter school students and after-school programs. "It's a reality that in this neighborhood, you're up against some pretty tough odds," Cole said. "We had to sort of remind everybody (Wednesday) that we're in this neighborhood for a reason." Kids Unlimited reported the burglary to police just after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the nonprofit facility's offices, located in the 1000 block of North Riverside Avenue. Police said the theft was in a building across the street from the main facility. The property included a full-size gold iPad worth $800, and multiple silver iPad Minis. Detective Sgt. Brent Mak said the burglars used a "fist-sized gray rock" to shatter a window and enter the building. There was also some additional damage to furniture inside. Police have gone through the scene looking for forensic evidence, but reported no concrete leads. Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to contact Medford police at 541-770-4784.
