PREP ROUNDUP Mustangs lose goalie, still advance GRANTS PASS -- Hidden Valley had to overcome the loss of stalwart sophomore goalkeeper Tim VanderStoel in Tuesday's 3-0 victory over North Valley in a District 6 boys soccer playoff game at the Josephine County Fairgrounds. VanderStoel had recorded nine shutouts in the Mustangs' previous 14 games. But he was knocked out of the contest with an eye injury at the 30th minute after a collision with a North Valley player. VanderStoel's status had not been determined for the Mustangs' (11-2-2) opening round state playoff match against Marist on Saturday in Eugene. "He's (VanderStoel) the best goalkeeper in the league," said Hidden Valley coach Charlie Seal, whose team advanced to the state semifinals the previous two seasons. "It took our team a while to recover. After that injury, we only had one shot on goal the remainder of the half, while they had three or four good opportunities." Junior Nick Kauffman came in and completed the shutout in the net. The Mustangs took advantage of a North Valley defensive mistake for a goal at the 17th minute. Seth GeRay fed a wide open Garrett Drummond, who got a low kick into the corner past Knights goalie Lee Manes. Hidden Valley junior Matt Johnson completed the scoring with his 29th and 30th goals of the season in the second half. Junior Scott Palmer led the Mustangs' defensive effort. Palmer saved one goal with a sliding save after the ball got past Kauffman. "He cleaned up everything that came through the midfield,"said Seal. "He made it difficult for North Valley to get a clean shot on goal." ROSEBURG 2, CENTRAL CATHOLIC 1, shootout -- At Roseburg, Justin Rinaker was the hero as Roseburg advanced with the Class 4A state playoff victory. The Indians (11-4), the Southern Oregon Conference No. 4 team, travel to Portland for a 5:30 p.m. match Saturday against Portland Interscholastic League champion Wilson. Roseburg and Central Catholic played through a scoreless regulation and the first of two 10-minute overtimes. Andrew Manhart gave the Rams the lead five minutes into the second overtime period, but Rinaker tied the match on a header off an assist from Brody Shelby with one minute remaining. Central Catholic made its first three kicks in the shootout, but Roseburg goalie Alex Williams blocked the Rams' fourth and fifth kicks. Rinaker gave the Indians the victory on the fifth penalty kick after the Indians converted three of their first four shots. Girls Soccer GRESHAM 1, GRANTS PASS 0 -- At Gresham, freshman midfielder Katy Ralstin scored on an assist from junior Melanie Haynes with 23:45 left in the Class 4A state playoff sub-round game. Gresham advances to play at Lake Oswego Saturday. Junior goalie Carly King recorded the shutout. Volleyball NORTH VALLEY 15-15, PHOENIX 13-7 -- At Phoenix, Sutton Jackson and Tiffany Ross provided Phoenix strong play in the middle, but the Pirates couldn't match North Valley's high-octane attack in the Skyline Conference playoff match. "They did a better job of going from serve-receive into their offense," Phoenix coach Tom Murphy said. "They were getting good swings and sending high caliber bullets over the net and we were sending low caliber bullets back." The victory advances North Valley into the Class 3A state playoffs as the Skyline No. 3 team. The Knights will play at Val-Co League runner-up Philomath at 6 p.m. Saturday. Jackson led the Pirates with 10 kills, while Ross contributed four. For North Valley, senior middle Amanda Renius had 15 kills and six blocks, Charlotte Beck came up with 10 digs and Elena Mendoza provided 10 digs and 23 assists. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 10-15-15, LOST RIVER 15-6-12 -- At Merrill, Cascade Christian had to overcome 12 service errors to rally for the Southern Cascade League playoff victory. The Challengers advance to a league playoff game at Bonanza on Thursday. Bonanza defeated Chiloquin 15-2, 5-15 and 15-4 in the other SCL playoff match Tuesday. The Cascade Christian-Bonanza winner will gain a Class 2A state tournament spot and play at St. Mary's on Saturday in a SCL state tournament seeding game. Cascade Christian capitalized on six serving errors by the Raiders and overcame a 12-3 deficit in the third game. Cascade's Shelly Nicholson served five straight points to knot the score at 12, then Krystle Holtz served two aces to end the match. "Our girls showed a lot of character," Cascade Christian coach Susan Gmur said. "Volleyball is such a momentum sport and it really turned for us at the end." Cascade Christian never led in the opening game, but had fewer service errors and started blocking effectively in the game 2 win. Kelly Clarke had a team-high 11 kills and six blocks for the Challengers. Kristin Salamone also had six blocks, while Holtz contributed six kills and four blocks. Cascade received a strong passing game from Christine McCandless, who was perfect on 16 passes in the match. Boys Water Polo ASHLAND 27, COTTAGE GROVE 6 -- At Ashland, Nathan Majeski scored nine goals to help Ashland to the Southern League district playoff victory. Grizzly captain Adam Foley added five goals and five assists. Ashland advances to the district finals Friday and Saturday in Albany and Corvallis.
