Challengers romp in season-opener WHITE CITY Cascade Christians Bryan Edwards received more time on the mound than anticipated during an impressive pitching outing Tuesday. Edwards tossed five shutout innings with 10 strikeouts as the Challengers posted a season-opening 10-0 six-inning victory over Umpqua Valley Christian at the V.A. Domiciliarys Memorial Field. Last years Southern Cascade League all-star pitcher and second-team all state selection walked one and allowed a fourth-inning double. "For March 13 it was not bad," Cascade Christian coach John Bruce said. "He throws a lot of strikes. I was only going to throw him three or four innings, but he didnt have that many pitches." Bruce planned to limit Edwards to 56 pitches, but the senior right-hander was very efficient so the veteran coach allowed him to stay in the game longer. Blake McCormick led the Challengers attack with three hits and Nolan Roberts added two hits and three RBIs. Cascade took the initial lead with three runs in the third inning. Chad Harvey opened with a single and McCormick followed with a base hit. Both runners moved up on a passed ball and Harvey scored on a wild pitch. Edwards helped his cause with a two-run single. The Challengers capitalized on three hit batters and three walks to score six runs in the sixth inning to end the contest on the 10-run mercy rule. Roberts two-run double was the big hit during the outburst.
