Illinois Valley softball coach Gary Pope has. The Henley Hornets (5-0 Skyline) tagged the Cougars for 14 hits and 12 runs to win Tuesday’s Skyline Conference game running away, 12-0. "It was just one of those games where they had it dialed in and everything they hit found the gap," Pope said. "We only committed one error. They came out stroking the ball and running the bases well. "They snagged the extra base if we were slow in the field. What can you say? They came over here and took one." Henley pitcher Jessica Birt held Illinois Valley (7-4, 3-3 Skyline) to just four hits. Jessica Ragsdale went 2-for-3 to lead the Cougars. Tiffany Pope and Megan Jackson both singled for the only other IV hits. Henley went into the game a half-game back of league-leading Phoenix. It scored a run in the top of the first and took a 2-0 lead with another run in the third. The Hornets scored three more in the fourth and rumbled to a decisive victory with a four-run effort in the seventh. Birt also doubled twice to lead the Hornets’ offense. Kristi Kinsman and Tara Houglum had three hits apiece. Melissa Miller and Jones both doubled and drove in two runs apiece. Jill Artoff was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Chieftains (7-3, 3-3 Skyline). The Mustangs are now 0-2 in league play.
