It seems that I have heard that the Jackson County Sheriff's Department will provide services to Josephine County as needed. I was not aware that our city provides these services to our neighboring county. — Susan L., by email Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said it's not unusual for neighboring jurisdictions to assist each other, especially in cases that could prove to be sensitive. Budreau said the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety asked Medford to investigate Hare to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest in looking into the activities of an elected official in Josephine County. This no doubt is on your radar, Susan, because Hare, 37, has been in the news for recently being arrested in Eugene on drunken-driving charges. In 2013, Hare reported his Jeep stolen, but a Medford police detective who handled the case eventually concluded that Hare made a false report, according to the Grants Pass Daily Courier. A detective interviewed several people with Hare the night of the alleged theft who said Hare had consumed alcohol at several downtown establishments, the Courier reported. The case was closed, however, after the state Department of Justice determined there was insufficient evidence to charge Hare with a crime. So while many suspect as you do, Susan, that Hare's report was "false," that was never proven in court. Budreau said Medford police will respond to other counties when a local case takes them there and occasionally assist other agencies with sensitive investigations, "but it is rare." Other agencies also help MPD. "They come down here to arrest bad guys and do search warrants, and we go up there," Budreau wrote in an email. "We help each other out. Like us going to Washington to look for the murder suspect (in a recent downtown Medford killing). We sent two detectives but they provided several officers to assist us." The MPD investigation of Hare was not related to news reports in recent years about local police — mostly county sheriff's deputies — traveling to Josephine County to carry out investigations because budget cuts have left the Josephine County's Sheriff's Office with scant resources.
